Today In History
by
Thomas Newsom
(c) 1997.
Foreword
---------
The Data files holding the History information where originally by Peter
Deane formally of OZMetro BBS fame. My thanks go to Peter for those. If
anyone knows the whereabouts of Peter (His BBS is no longer listed in the
nodelist) could they please inform me via netmail. He was originally listed
as 3:622/401.0 but that was a few years ago. His address was given as PO
Box 282, Swansea NSW 2281, Australia. His BBS name was called The INQUESTOR
Bulletin Board Service.
I hope Peter doesn't mind me pinching his data files :-)
What is this and what does it do?
----------------------------------
Today in History simply displays some birthdays and events which happened
on the current day sometime in history. best of all its FREE! However if
you feel like sending me 1/2/3 or more UKP for it then feel free, I don't
mind ;-)
What machine specs do I need?
-----------------------------
It should run on any Amiga from OS1.3 through to OS3.1, please inform me if
this is not the case. I'm running OS3.0 with an 030/50 CPU and it runs
fine.
What BBS software will it run on?
---------------------------------
Any BBS software that can run DOS doors. It uses no specific commands for
any particular BBS software. There are a few ANSI characters dotted about
the program. These help in positioning and colourisation of the final
display. There are NO backdoors in this program.
How do I install it?
--------------------
Installation couldn't be simpler :-) You've already done the hard part by
unpacking the archive. Now all you need to do is move the entire History
directory to somewhere on your system, assuming of course you haven't
already done so.
What do I do now?
-----------------
Now you MUST run it at least once before you can use it for display on your
BBS. History takes one argument and that is the path to it's data
directory (which should always be inside the history directory). Lets
assume you have a doors assignment and you've put the History directory in
there. Within the History directory we have a data directory. So the full
path becomes 'Doors:History/data/' without the quotes. The trailing slash
is important and MUST be present. Now we'll run the program. Assuming the
path above this will look something like this...
Doors:History/History Doors:History/data/
Easy eh ;-) This can be done either through your BBS software or through a
normal shell/cli.
When run it will create the uptodate data file ready for display to your
users. To display the resultant History.lst just tell your BBS where it
is. How you do this depends on your BBS software so I won't go into that
here.
Now you should run the History program from your nightly Cron/Events file
so that it automatically updates the History.lst file. Again, how you do
this depends on your BBS software. I reccomend a time setting of midnight
or thereabouts. This will ensure the History.lst is uptodate immediately
for the current date.
I've done that now what?
------------------------
Thats it :-) You have fully installed Today In History. if for whatever
reason it doesn't appear to be working please recheck all the above and try
again. It DOES work :-)
Who did this program?
---------------------
My name is Thomas Newsom. I live in Hull (Kingston-Upon-Hull for those who
like to be right about these things). I run The Open All Hours BBS on
+44-(0)1482-345494 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Why not give me a call to
say "Hi!" :-)
I would like those who use Today In History to send me a message via
Fidonet if possible, my address is Thomas Newsom@2:2502/61.0
If that isn't possible then feel free to send a letter or postcard saying
your using this program. You could also mention the BBS software your
using so I can see which software it'll run on (It should be all of them
but you never know).
My snail address is...
1 Granville Villas
Sculcoates Lane
Hull, HU5 2DZ
East Yorkshire.
I would like everyone who uses this program to get in touch through either
method as I'll be compiling a list of who (name) and what (BBS software).
The end bit :-)
---------------
If there is any door type programs you would like to see, either rewrites
of some already in use or new doors noone has bothered to do yet, then get
in contact with me at the address above and I'll see what I can do for you.
Make sure you explain fully what the program is suppose to be doing, so I
have a good idea of what I'm suppose to be writing. Please don't be BBS
software specific as I won't be remotely interested ;-)
Well, thats enough waffle from me. I apologise now for the docs as I hate
writing these things (it shows doesn't it?). I hope you find a use for
Today In History on your BBS. Thanks in advance for using Today In History
:-)
The End!
